Since 1989, the “REDS research program” sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has informed and transformed transfusion medicine practice around the world. This program has gone through three previous phases (REDS, REDS II, and REDS III), with numerous groundbreaking accomplishments. In 2019, work began on the fourth version of REDS, called “REDS-IV-P,” emphasizing analysis of blood donors, blood components, and recipients, with a special effort to address pediatric and neonatal research. The co-chairs of the project join me to share exciting developments that will shape future transfusion practice.
